Today is a day to see God at work. Actually you see God at work every day, but this amazing truth often slips from our thoughts. God’s powerful will and plan includes everything from a sparrow falling to the ground to the changing of governments. The Holy Spirit reminds us of these facts in his word:
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. Matthew 10:29
He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them.
He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. Daniel 2:21
As I look out my window, the wind is blowing. Brilliantly colored leaves fill the air as they too fall to the ground just as God has planned. These leaves fall and provide insulation and nutrients for the soil. And then next spring the trees will again burst into vivid pastel blossoms that are followed by fresh vibrant green leaves. God is always at work.
So, this day is a day to remind you that this is God’s world and he does as he pleases for the good of his people and the honor of his name. This is the perspective to give to your children. You can easily get caught up in school schedules, financial worries, elections, concerns about the future and lose sight of the One who makes all things happen.
Encourage your children to watch God at work. Look at the blowing leaves or the falling snow. Observe the news stories. Be thankful for a safe ride to school or home or to work. Remember that the unexpected flat tire or schedule changes are not random events. Be in awe that God’s is faithful to bring glory and honor to his name and to save a people for himself.
Tell you children that what they see each minute of each day is the hand of God at work. While you may not always understand what is happening you always know that God is in action. As the Scripture says, “God is not far from any one of us.”
